National Parks vs Wildlife Sanctuaries vs Biosphere Reserves
Introduction
India protects its biodiversity through a network of Protected Areas (PAs) under the Wildlife Protection Act
(WPA), 1972.
1. National Parks (NP)
- Protection Level: Highest. No human activity (grazing, firewood collection) allowed.
- Focus: Habitat protection.
- Example: Jim Corbett (First NP), Kaziranga (Rhinos).
2. Wildlife Sanctuaries (WLS)
- Protection Level: Less than NP. Limited human activity allowed if it doesn't harm
wildlife.
- Focus: Species-oriented (e.g., Bird Sanctuary). Can be upgraded to NP.
Biosphere Reserves (BR)
Not under WPA initially, but part of UNESCO's Man and Biosphere (MAB) program. It has 3 zones:
- Core: No entry (like NP).
- Buffer: Research and tourism.
- Transition: Human settlements allowed.
Conclusion
While NPs and WLSs follow a fortress conservation model, BRs aim for sustainable co-existence of man and
nature.
